Providing Mobile Oral health care for people with mobility issues and special
needs
Smiles on Wheels is a mobile dental service, providing examinations and preventive dental treatment to people who may have difficulty accessing a traditional dental clinic.
We provide services catering to patients with physical disabilities, seniors and high needs patients, dental phobic patients and children with special needs, helping these people overcome barriers to dental care. Our focus is on providing preventive dental treatment to residents of group homes, residential aged care facilities, special needs patients and immobile people in the comfort of their home. Often the challenge of leaving home is more than physical - we can treat people where they feel comfortable, familiar and safe - their home!

Frequently Asked Questions:
What services can Smiles on Wheels offer in aged care or group homes?
We offer preventive and basic dental care, including cleanings, exams, denture care, and oral health education. We may also provide oral hygiene guidance to caregivers. Do you offer services to children? Yes - we offer diagnostic and preventive dental services to children who may have difficulties visiting their traditional dental clinic. Barriers such as autism and dental anxiety can be overcome if a child is seen in the comfort of their home. Eligible children can claim our dental services via the CDBS or private health fund. How is infection control managed in a mobile dental setup? Smiles on Wheels adheres to strict infection control guidelines. Sterile, tracked, single use instruments are used to maintain the highest standard of infection control. We follow all protocols set by health authorities to maintain a safe environment. Is mobile dental care safe for elderly patients with complex medical needs? Yes, our Oral Health Therapist is trained to work with elderly patients, including those with chronic conditions, disabilities, or dementia. We can take extra precautions and adapt care plans based on each individual's health status and needs. Can you treat elderly patients with impairments, or other health issues? Our OHT has successfully completed the Dental Hygienists Association of Australia Aged Care Education Program and has over 20 years experience. She loves the challenges and rewards that come with treating elderly patients, and those with special needs. Can you treat patients in a wheelchair, or those bed-bound? Yes, we can - we can perform dental treatments for people who have mobility issues. We can provide treatments to patients in their wheelchair, bed, favourite chair or wherever they feel comfortable. What are the benefits of mobile dental services for aged care residents? Convenience, reduced travel stress and the ability to remain in a familiar safe location removes some of the barriers to traditional dental support. Improved oral health and continuity of care helps in reducing risks of systemic health issues related to poor oral hygiene, like heart disease and pneumonia. How often should aged care residents receive dental visits? Generally, aged care residents benefit from dental checkups every 6–12 months, though some may require more frequent visits based on their health conditions. What if a resident requires specialized or emergency dental care? Smiles on Wheels can refer patients to local clinics or specialists if they require procedures beyond mobile capabilities. For emergencies, they can provide diagnosis or temporary relief and recommend further action. How can caregivers help maintain residents' oral health between visits? Caregivers are encouraged to assist with daily brushing, monitor for issues like sores or swelling, and follow oral care routines recommended by the dental provider. Are there limitations to mobile dental equipment compared to a traditional clinic? Smiles on Wheels is equipped for most preventive and basic restorative care, but complex surgeries or treatments may still require a visit to a traditional dental clinic. |
